Trump—Flying Aboard Air Force One on Way to Super Bowl—Proclaims It ‘Gulf of America’ Day

President Donald Trump flew to New Orleans Sunday to attend the Super Bowl, and on the way, his plane, Air Force One, flew over the Gulf of ~~Mexico~~ America. As we reported, the president signed an executive order in early January re-naming the marginal sea to something more… American.

The U.S. Coast Guard almost immediately started using the term, marking it the U.S. government’s first official use of the term.

But Trump wasn’t done, and he signed a proclamation while in flight proclaiming the first ever “Gulf of America Day:

Trump also pushed for another name change:

The changes will apply to official federal documents and maps, though it is unclear whether the order also requires schools to use the new terminology.

Trump has also pushed to rename Alaska’s Mount Denali, pointing out that it was originally named after President William McKinley.

He had the proclamation announced aloud over the intercom:

The president signed a proclamation on Sunday and had the flight crew announce that Air Force One was passing over the newly renamed gulf when it flew from Palm Beach, Fla., to New Orleans. Trump made the trip on Sunday to attend the Super Bowl.

The proclamation declares “February 9, 2025, as Gulf of America Day,” adding, “I call upon public officials and all the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.”

The proclamation read:

“Today, I am very honored to recognize February 9, 2025, as the first ever Gulf of America Day,” the proclamation read.

“I took this action in part because, as stated in that Order, “[t]he area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.”

The president made his intentions known at the very beginning of his second (non-consecutive) term:

Trump announced his push for the name change during his first press conference as the 47th President of the United States of America.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory,” Trump previously said at his first news conference. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”

Trump’s interior secretary was enthusiastic and promised he’d do his part to make the name change official:
