Jason Momoa Texted ‘F—ing Lobo’ to James Gunn on the First Day He Took Over DC Studios; Gunn Responded: ‘I’ve Said You Should Be Lobo For Years’
Jason Momoa wasn’t kidding when he said playing the comic book character Lobo was a top priority for him. In a new post on X, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn revealed the text Momoa sent him when it was announced in fall 2022 that Gunn and Peter Safran would be heading up the Warner Bros. superhero division. The text was simple: “Fucking Lobo.”
“Dude, I’ve said you should be Lobo for years. No lie,” Gunn wrote back to the actor at the time.
In sharing the text exchange, Gunn now wrote: “On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios — the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo. I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life & can’t wait to share that with all of you.”
Momoa is playing Lobo in “Supergirl: World of Tomorrow,” which is now in production. The superhero movie — starring “House of the Dragon” actor Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El — is set to be the second film in Gunn and Safran’s rebooted DC Universe following Gunn’s “Superman,” which arrives in theaters this July and stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Craig Gillespie is directing “Supergirl,” which also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as villain Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle.
Momoa’s Lobo casting was officially announced last December. He confirmed the casting news on Instagram by sharing a quote from a previous Fandango interview he did in which he discussed his interest in playing the character.
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,” he said in the interview. “I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”
Momoa played Aquaman in the previous DC Universe under Zack Snyder, starring in two standalone movies as well as “Justice League.” His time as the character came to an end after the 2023 release of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” but even before that movie came out he was vocal about wanting a new role in Gunn’s rebooted universe.
“I think that with Peter Safran and Mr. Gunn at the helm now at DC, I’m very excited about that,” Momoa told Entertainment Tonight in 2022 after the news of the duo’s hiring. “There are a lot of cool things that will be coming up. One of my dreams come true will be happening under their watch. So, stay tuned!”
Momoa’s Lobo debut will be seen when “Supergirl” opens in theaters on June 26, 2026.
