Federal Liberal leadership hopeful Mark Carney is making a stop in Windsor this week.

Carney will spend some of Wednesday in the city with local MP Irek Kusmierczyk (L — Windsor-Tecumseh), who on Tuesday endorsed the former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor for party leadership.

Carney is expected to deliver remarks and answer media questions in the morning.

In a video posted to social media on Tuesday, Kusmierczyk said Canadians “need a strong and steady hand, a pragmatic voice that can unite our country. Not a lifelong politician, but someone with real work experience who understands the economy and knows the hearts of Canadians.”

He went on to say that the country needs a leader “who knows how to bring people together and build allies, both here and abroad — someone that represents change, a new direction, but someone who will continue to fight for workers in Windsor-Essex,” he said.

For Kusmierczyk, that leader is Carney.

In January, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he is stepping down after 12 years leading the Liberal Party of Canada. The Liberal Party will choose his replacement through a vote by its members.

Trudeau’s successor will become Canada’s new prime minister.

Last week, the Liberal Party of Canada announced that nearly 400,000 registered Liberals had signed up to vote in the leadership race. The vote is scheduled to take place on March 9.

Joining Carney in the race to lead the Liberal Party are former finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, former House leader Karina Gould, former Brampton Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla, and businessman and former Montreal Liberal MP Frank Baylis.
